About Yafbog

Yafbog is a social website built around a fairly old idea: the web is more interesting when it feels like it is made of people and places instead of accounts being fed through a machine.

Profiles here are meant to be places worth visiting. People can post journals and media, talk in comments, make connections, follow people they find interesting, and wander into parts of the site they did not already know existed.

We like some things about the older social web, but Yafbog is not an attempt to preserve 2006 in amber. Nobody needs another website doing historical reenactment with rounded GIF buttons and a visitor counter.

The goal is to take some of what worked about that era and build from it.

People, not content sources

A person is more than the thing they posted five minutes ago.

Profiles, friendships, conversations, journals, media, and the history that accumulates around them are important parts of Yafbog. The site should feel inhabited by recognizable people rather than populated by interchangeable accounts passing through a feed.

Profiles are places

A profile should be somewhere you visit, poke around, and come back to.

People can organize what they share, build out different parts of their profile, and make those spaces their own. Two profiles do not need to become identical containers wearing different avatars.

Exploration is part of the point

Not every interaction needs to begin with an algorithm deciding that two people have a 63.4 percent probability of maintaining eye contact.

Yafbog is designed to make browsing normal. Find somebody through a friend. Read a comment. Wander through a profile. Discover somebody else. Come back tomorrow.

The web works surprisingly well when people are allowed to explore it.

Your feed should belong to you

Feeds are useful. Having one invisible system decide what everybody should see is less useful.

Yafbog gives people ways to choose whose posts they want to see and to build different views of the site around their own interests and relationships. We want feeds to be tools people control, not behavioral experiments people live inside.

Familiar, but not frozen in time

Some parts of Yafbog will feel familiar to people who used social sites before every service became an endless vertical stream. That is intentional.

But nostalgia is not the product.

The larger goal is to build a social place that feels human, explorable, persistent, and a little unpredictable.

In other words: somewhere on the web worth visiting.
