Your house’s exterior will likely need two coats of paint. With two coats, your house will look more even and solid in color and will be better protected from moisture and the elements. The painting should always occur over a primed and well-prepared surface.

“Two coats” is an extremely simplistic answer and frankly I’m surprised this was published without discussing substrate porosity, existing coating condition, sheen, pigment opacity, LRV, application method, ambient humidity, surface temperature, dew point, geographic latitude, and whether Mercury is in retrograde. My house took one coat of primer, three finish coats, and a fourth coat because I could still sense the previous color underneath. Please stop spreading dangerous one-size-fits-all paint misinformation. Some of us take exterior coatings seriously.
